Christopher Columbus - Darragh, Daniel

BBC - Christopher Columbus

Our names are Darragh and Daniel and we are going to tell you more about Christopher Columbus. He was a sailor.

Did you know......America wasn't named after Columbus! It was named after Amerigo Verspucci. He discovered it first. This is what he looks like.

The three ships were the Santa Maria, the Pinta and the Nina. Here they are.

The Santa Maria was the leader of the ships. Christopher was the captain of this ship.

The ships were made of wood. We learnt last month that wood is a material. Our desks, doors and pencils are made of wood.

Can you think of anything else made from wood?

The sailors were scared to go on the journey for four reasons.

1. They thought they would get scurvy. This is when your teeth fall out and your bones break because you don't eat fruit and vegatables.

2. They thought there were sea monsters in the oceans.

3. They thought they would fall off the edge of the world because it was flat. We know that the Earth is a 3-D shape. It's a sphere.

4. They thought that if they went too close to the sun they would burn to ash.

Christopher Columbus - Nessa, Alexia, Jasmine

We are going to tell you about Christopher Columbus. He looks like this.

Lots of people think Columbus discovered America. Did you know the Vikings were actually the first? They went sailing around the year 1000 A.D.

Almost 500 years later Columbus found America by mistake. Columbus set sail from Spain in 1492 with three ships called the Santa Maria, the Pinta and the Nina. We made these ships last week. Have a look at the blog post on our page.

Spain - Tom, Anthony, Darragh

Tom, Anthony and Darragh here. We will tell you about Spain. Spain is a hot country. The Spanish name for Spain is Espana.

The capital of Spain is Madrid.

Spain produces a large quantity of onions.

Spain has bullfighting. Bullfighting is dangerous as people get on top of the bulls.

Here are some photographs.

Tapas bars are very popular in Spain. You get many small dishes of food. Foods like olives, peppers, prawns, chorizo, anchoives and cheeses.

We learnt about Paella. Thanks so much to Doireann who brought us in the receipe! We might try it at home. Have a look.

Hi our names are Rachel, Ruth and Sally and we are going to tell you about Spain.

Three countries border Spain. In the North East you find France and Andorra. To the west of Spain you find Portugal.

Find them on our map.

1. In Spain there is a tooth mouse in stead of a tooth fairy .

2. In Spain they have bullfighting. In bullfighting when the bull gets tired the men have to kill it.

3. Spanish is not only spoken in Spain but across they hole wide world.

4. In Spain there are Flamenco dancing.

5. In Spain they have green light on the taxi's roof.

6. In Spain they have Siestas. Siesta is when you go to sleep and rest during the afternoon. They go inside because this is the hottest time of the day.

Ireland V Australia - Megan, Holly, Emily

Hi it's Megan, Holly and Emily here and we are here to talk about Ireland and Australia.

Here are some differences .....

1. When it is morning in Ireland it is night in Australia. Ireland is in the northern hemisphere. Australia is in the southern hemisphere.

2. In Australia it is hot and in Ireland it is cold.

3. Australia and Ireland are two different countries. Australia is a bigger country than Ireland.

We are from Ireland and Holly is from Australia. We have another boy in the class from Australia and his name is Tom.

Let's talk about school ....

We are going to talk about school in Australia. Holly thinks school is very different here in Ireland than it was when she was in Australia.

1. You only get homework on Monday and you have the whole week to get it finished. In Ireland we get homework every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. We have to do it that night and bring it into teacher the next day.

2. In Australia we go to school when people in Ireland are asleep.

3. In Australia we go to school at 8.30am but in Ireland we go to school at 8.50am.

4. In Ireland we learn Irish but in Australia they only speak English.

Green Schools

Saint Valentine

We have learnt all about Saint Valentine.

Have a listen to Tom, Doireann and Harry who are going to tell you the story of this very famous saint.

They do an excellent job!!

All of us wrote a piece about St. Valentine's life. He lived in Rome, Italy 2,000 years ago!

We made hearts, as they are a symbol of St. Valentine and his feast day February 14th. Inside these hearts we drew the pictures of love and decorated them.

Our Space Projects

We did such excellent work on space last month.

The projects completed by everyone in Room 12 are just fantastic. They are displayed outside our room if you want to have a closer look.

We presented our projects to the class this week. Everybody did a super job!

(...Unfortunately we had no mics so the volume is a little low. We will know for next time!)

P.S. We would like to say a huge thanks to all the moms and dads who sent in such fantastic resources for us to work with!
